PERU LEADING THE OCTOBER BIG DAY 2023
October 20, 2023
On October 14th, thousands of birders around the world went out in their countries to observe and register birds. The October Big Day is an initiative of the Cornell University Ornithology Laboratory to show the importance of birds and their environments.
In some countries it is really a Big Day! One of those countries is Peru. It is not only because of the great diversity of bird species in the country (1892 spp), but also because the number of Peruvian birders is increasing. We are enjoying this big day, with enthusiasm to be in the field and see the sunrise on coast, in mountains and jungle, waiting for our first bird species for the list.
The results for Peru this year were very good! We registered 1,384 species in 2264 lists, and with these numbers we were the country that registered the highest number of birds in the world in one day. It is great news for the country because it shows that Peru is and continues to be a great destination for birdwatchers. And above all, it shows the growing number of Peruvian birders. That fills us with happiness and optimism, because it is a sign that there are more and more people with real interest in birds and their habitats.
Kuntur Birding was in the Manu National Park and we recorded more than 200 species. We feel happy to have been part of this great moment for our country. Congratulations to all the Peruvian birders who represented their country with joy and effort.
