OVERVIEW

Manu National Park in southeastern Peru is a UNESCO park with diverse ecosystems that are home to an unprecedented variety of animals, plant species, butterflies, orchids, more than 1000 species of birds like Peru’s national bird: the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. The extraordinary biodiversity, its large size and great conservation state make Manu National Park a place of global importance. The park is home to more than 200 species of mammals such as the iconic Jaguar, Lowland Tapir and different species of monkeys. Manu is divided into three zones: the “core zone” which is only accessible for scientists and researchers, the “reserved zone” which is only accessible for a limited number of tour operators and their tours and the “cultural zone” which is openly accessible and where local people live in small villages. Due to its difficult access, the park is still nearly roadless, it has been spared from most modern human impact. The park can be reached by car from the old Inca capital Cusco.
