OVERVIEW
Join us for a one-of-a-kind photography journey through the rainforests of both northern and southern Peru. During this 12-day macro photography expedition we will discover an unprecedented wealth of small life in distinct ecosystems— from colorful insects and amphibians to beautifully camouflaged reptiles.
The Peruvian Amazon is a fantastic place for macro photography, with its lush vegetation, constant humidity, and dense biodiversity. Tiny creatures thrive here, often hidden in plain sight — beneath leaves, clinging to tree barks, or glistening in the night. Peru is home to one of the highest concentrations of endemic species in the world.
We begin our journey in the southern part of the Peruvian Amazon, where we will be staying at the charming Posada Amazonas Lodge at the border of the famous Tambopata National Reserve. This eco-lodge is co-managed by the indigenous communities of the Infierno Reserve close to Puerto Maldonado. Close to the lodge, we will have great photographic opportunities. In addition to macro subjects like frogs, beetles, spiders, and snakes, the area around Posada Amazonas also offers chances to photograph wildlife on the nearby oxbow lake — including the remarkable Hoatzin, Capped Heron, and the fantastic Giant River Otter.
In the second half of the tour, we travel to the north and settle into the beautiful Muyuna Lodge, located within the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area. Nestled along a tributary of the mighty Amazon River, this lodge is surrounded by flooded forests, meandering creeks, and rich wildlife habitats. This watery landscape is home to a completely different set of species — like glass frogs and aquatic insects.
The contrast between the dry forest in the south and the flooded jungle of the north creates a dynamic and diverse macro photography experience.
Join our guide, the experienced Peruvian macro photographer Carlos Gonzales, together with expert local guides, for an unforgettable journey into the Amazon’s hidden world. The photos in the header and gallery are made by Carlos Gonzales.
