OVERVIEW

A one-of-a-kind photography journey through the rainforests of northern and southern Peru. During this 12-day macro photography expedition, we will explore a remarkable diversity of small life across distinct ecosystems—from colorful insects and amphibians to beautifully camouflaged reptiles.

The Peruvian Amazon is an exceptional destination for macro photography, with its lush vegetation, constant humidity, and remarkable biodiversity. Tiny creatures thrive here, often hidden in plain sight—beneath leaves, clinging to tree bark, or glistening in the night.

We begin our journey in the southern Peruvian Amazon, where we will stay at the charming Posada Amazonas Lodge, located on the edge of the famous Tambopata National Reserve. This eco-lodge is co-managed by the indigenous community of the Infierno Reserve, near Puerto Maldonado. The area around the lodge offers excellent photographic opportunities. In addition to macro subjects such as frogs, beetles, spiders, and snakes, we will also explore a nearby oxbow lake, where we may photograph a variety of wildlife, including birds like the Hoatzin and Capped Heron, as well as mammals such as the Giant River Otter.

In the second half of the tour, we travel north and settle into the beautiful Muyuna Lodge, located within the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area. Nestled along a tributary of the mighty Amazon River, this lodge is surrounded by flooded forests, meandering creeks, and rich wildlife habitats. This watery landscape is home to a completely different set of species, including glass frogs and aquatic insects.

The experienced Peruvian macro photographer Carlos Gonzales will be guiding the tour, together with local guides. The photos in the header and gallery were taken by Carlos Gonzales.

The contrast between the southern rainforest and the flooded forests of the north creates a dynamic and diverse macro photography experience, offering an unforgettable journey into the Amazon’s hidden world.
