OVERVIEW

The north-eastern slopes of the Andes in Peru, where lush cloud forest merges into the Amazon, are home to an extraordinary diversity of bird species, including a wide variety of hummingbirds.

This tour is specially designed for photographing around 50 species of these fascinating birds.

One of our main targets is the spectacular Marvelous Spatuletail, considered one of the most beautiful hummingbirds in the world. With its unique, elongated tail feathers, this species is endemic to a small region in northern Peru.

Other highlights include the tiny Rufous-crested Coquette, Wire-crested Thorntail, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Long-tailed Sylph, Peruvian Racket-tail, Emerald-bellied Puffleg, the endemic Koepcke’s Hermit, and the near-endemic Royal Sunangel — all a true delight to observe and photograph.

In addition, we will have excellent opportunities to photograph many other interesting species, including endemic antpittas such as Chestnut Antpitta, Ochre-fronted Antpitta, and Rusty-tinged Antpitta. We will also look for other endemics, including the elusive Long-whiskered Owlet and Johnson’s Tody-Flycatcher, two species only recently described by science.

During our stay, we will be photographing in a variety of habitats, as well as in the lodge’s beautiful gardens with feeders.

We will conclude the tour with a short boat trip on the Pacific Ocean near Lima, where we can photograph seabirds such as Humboldt Penguin, Peruvian Booby, Peruvian Pelican the attractive Inca Tern, and the endemic Surf Cinclodes.

This immersive tour offers the opportunity to photograph a rich variety of hummingbirds and other bird species across northern Peru’s diverse and beautiful environments.

We have written a blog featuring three of the highlight hummingbirds of this tour: Marvelous Spatuletail, Rufous-crested Coquette, and Royal Sunangel.
