VILLA MARHES
Half Day
OVERVIEW
Spend a rewarding birding morning at the Villa Marshes (Pantanos de Villa), located on the outskirts of Lima. Covering 263.27 hectares, these wetlands are composed of brackish lagoons, islands, channels, totora reed beds, salt marshes, and grasslands.
The Villa Marshes are the only protected natural area within the urban limits of Peru’s capital city. It is a wonderful place to escape the hectic pace of Lima and an excellent birding destination.
Around 210 bird species have been recorded here, approximately 70% of which are migratory. The marshes are one of the most important feeding and resting sites for migratory birds along the Peruvian coast. Species arrive from North America (September to March), the austral region of southern South America (April to August), and the Peruvian high Andes (April to August).
Resident species that can be spotted in the marshes include Peruvian Thick-knee, Peruvian Meadowlark, Wren-like Rushbird, Chestnut-throated Seedeater, West Peruvian Dove, Cinnamon Teal, White-cheeked Pintail, Plumbeous Rail, Least Bittern, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Little Blue Heron, and the striking Many-colored Rush Tyrant.

Migratory species may include Franklin’s Gull, Hudsonian Whimbrel, Willet, and various sandpiper species.
We will leave the city early in the morning for a short drive to the marshes, where we will spend the rest of the morning.

LOMAS DE LACHAY
1 Day
OVERVIEW
A 1-day birding adventure to Lomas de Lachay, home to a variety of interesting and endemic bird species.
Reserva Nacional de Lachay is a protected area located 105 kilometers north of Lima. The “lomas,” or sand hills of Lachay, form a characteristic ecosystem in the Peruvian coastal desert, where flora and fauna survive thanks to the seasonal presence of dense, humid fogs from the ocean.
This unique ecosystem has two distinct seasons: a wet season (June to October), with 100% humidity due to the Pacific fogs, when the hills turn green; and a dry season, with strong sunlight and the absence of fog, when the greenery disappears completely.
It is an excellent place for birding, with more than 90 species recorded. Among them are the endemic Cactus Canastero, Coastal Miner, Thick-billed Miner, and the near-endemic Raimondi’s Yellow-Finch.
Other interesting species we might encounter in different parts of the reserve include Yellowish Pipit, Black-lored Yellowthroat, Short-tailed Field Tyrant, Grayish Miner, Least Seedsnipe, Tawny-throated Dotterel, Burrowing Owl, Peruvian Meadowlark, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Andean Tinamou, Mountain Parakeet, Peruvian Sheartail, Oasis Hummingbird, and various finches such as Band-tailed Sierra-Finch, Collared Warbling-Finch, and Raimondi’s Yellow-Finch.
On the way to the reserve, we will also look for the Peruvian Thick-Knee in the desert.
The tour starts and ends in Lima, where we will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and drop you off there in the afternoon.
